Maintaining Your Gray Hair

We live in a youth-obsessed society that tells us to hide our grays. But that state of mind is changing (and it’s about time!).

We have so many celebrities now who embrace their gray and show the world that they’ve most definitely still got it. How about Jamie Lee Curtis, George Clooney, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Anderson Cooper… Need we go on?

Gray is so in! Heck, even the “kids these days” are attempting to become premature silver foxes and vixen with silver ombres, balayage, blends and solid gray.

All that is to say that you look great in any color. If you choose to welcome your grays, we applaud you and want to help you maintain your sexy silver shine.

Going grayer…

As hair grays, it loses its melanin (AKA the color) and this takes away its elastic properties. As those melanin producing cells slow down the pigmentation, they also produce less sebum (AKA your hair’s natural oils) and this also causes gray hair to become drier. What’s interesting is that your gray hair is actually finer than it was before but because of this lack of sebum it feels more coarse.

Sure, there are tons of products on the market that claim to prevent the gray from taking hold. You could cover, pluck (please don’t) or seek out any number of quick fixes. You could even take a pill that claims to hold the gray at bay. But if you want to embrace the gray, we’re here for you.

Embrace the gray

Embracing the gray doesn’t necessarily mean just letting your hair do its thing and not taking any action. You can give your silver strands a boost with gray blending, which is a low maintenance color technique that hides the gray by adding in other colors that are similar to your hair’s natural shade.

You could also swing for highlights, lowlights, babylights, foilyage, balayage, hair painting, permanent, demi-permanent – whatever you want, we got what you need. We’ll find the most natural-looking way to blend in your gray.

Embrace the texture

Sometimes the gray is all about a mind shift. Instead of lamenting your previous hair, you could look at your new texture as an exciting new ‘do to style. That drier, coarser texture could mean that your hair dries quicker and maintains and hold styles longer and better. The new texture could also open up new avenues of hair styles that never worked before.

New you. New shampoo.

Gray hair is more porous, which means it can absorb everything easier. From sunscreens and face creams, to environmental pollutants, UV light and minerals in the water, all of these contaminants can discover that sleek silver and bring on a yellowish hue. Make sure you’re using the right shampoo, toner and products to preotect your hair. Need help sorting through the thousands of products out there? Maintain moisture

Gray hair will be more dry so make sure you’re careful about using conditioners and moisturizers. Depending on your hair type you may want to incorporate oils, leave-in conditioners deep conditioners once in a while.
