How to Take Better Care of Your Scalp
When you think of having healthy hair, what comes to mind? Odds are you are picturing shiny, soft, and supple locks – which we love! – but what often gets ignored is the importance of having a healthy scalp. If you tend to have issues with dandruff or greasy hair, it may be a sign that your scalp is asking for a little TLC.
Your scalp is to your hair what your skin is to your body. (ah, yes, hi – SAT-type analogies!) You need to take care of it in order to prevent all sorts of calamities. Through regular cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing, you can keep your hair follicles well-cared for, and subsequently, your hair too.
Here are a few tips on how to better take care of your scalp:
1. Your Scalp Needs Moisture: if you can’t seem to get rid of greasy hair despite constant washes, your scalp probably needs some moisture! Your scalp naturally produces oils (called sebum) that lubricate your hair as it grows – when you wash your hair excessively or use harsh shampoos, it strips all the natural oil produced and basically trick your scalp into making more, hence the non-stop oily hair. Consider washing your hair less frequently (use some dry shampoo if you need to!) or pick a shampoo that is a bit gentler on your sensitive scalp.
2. Your Scalp’s pH Balance is Off: that’s right, your scalp has its own pH balance! A healthy scalp has a natural pH ranging from 4 to 5, which is somewhat on the acidic side. When your scalp’s pH gets too acidic or basic, it can cause lack of moisture retention and lead to flaky or greasy hair. We recommend using a pH friendly shampoo (something with gentle sulfates) or doing an ACV treatment!
3. The Elements are Affecting Your Scalp: just like hair gets damaged by harsh weather, chemicals, sun exposure, and heat, your scalp can also suffer from the elements. Firstly (and this may be redundant), we highly recommend avoiding harsh hair products that will further irritate your scalp. If you live in an area with extreme weather, consider wearing a hat or protective style to keep your scalp healthy and protected. Be very careful with harsh hair treatments like perms and intense chemical treatments – these can damage your scalp and sometimes cause permanent problems.
