What to Know Before You Color Your Hair for the First Time

You see those ash gray locks on your Instagram feed. You drool over balayage tresses and wonder if you could pull off that ginger color. But your hair has never been dyed before. You have so many questions, and so many horror stories from your friends.

Not to fear. We’re here to clear the air and give you the facts on first time coloring. Before you enter the salon and get overwhelmed by the options and exotic terms, here’s what you need to know.

Do your research

Look up all the inspo your eyes can digest. By knowing what you like and what you don’t like, you’ll be able to show (rather than just telling) your stylist exactly what shade and look you’re going for. Do your research and look into particular stylists’ specialties. Don’t be afraid to ask for images of their work, or give their Instagram a thorough run-through before you decide on anything.

Consult before you cut

This is an incredibly important step that is not to be skipped. With a good consultation you and your stylist can talk about exactly what you’re looking for. They can give you the lowdown on what your imagined color will look like in reality and can tell you what is preferred (or possible) for your hair. Each head of hair is unique. Each person’s vision for coloring is different. A consultation can set your mind at ease and every question will be answered.

Don’t wash ahead of time

This one seems counter intuitive but it’s actually best is you don’t wash 24-48 hours before your coloring. Your hair’s oils provide a natural protection for the potentially harsh chemicals and washing beforehand could affect the end result.

Good things take time…

This is something your stylist can tell in more detail in your consult but achieving your desired color could take more than one appointment. It all depends on the difference between the shade of your natural hair and the color you are aiming for. The main reason for multiple appointments is not to hold you hostage in the salon as long as possible but rather to protect your hair. Dyeing can be harsh on hair and taking time with the process will allow your hair to repair in between treatments.

To add to this, it’s a law of life that nothing gold can stay. Your colors will fade and then you get to choose the new you all over again.

Be prepared for new products and a new routine

If you’re a hair color virgin, chances are high that the current shampoo, conditioner and other hair products on your shelf are not going to cut it. Color-treated hair is more porous and dry, so you’ll need to invest in products right for the new you. Look for sulfate-free, high quality products designed for color-treated hair. We know a good salon where you can find the best products in town…

You’re also going to need to work out your new routine. Your hair stylist will tell you everything you need to know to keep up the gorgeous hair in between appointments. You’ll definitely want to invest in a good heat protection spray and get used to using it regularly. You’ll also want to regularly apply treatments to keep your hair strong, healthy and moisturized.

Be prepared for the looks and the compliments

Finally, we want to be completely honest with you. You may receive some double takes and immense amounts of compliments. You’re just going to look so good, it comes with the territory.

Hopefully we’ve soothed your worries about first time hair coloring. There’s nothing to fear and everything to look forward to. Your hair is a palette. You are the designer. All you need is the artist (we might know a few…).
