What is Balayage?

You’ve heard this word over and over again in salons, magazines and celebrity Instagrams. Balayage. Is it a type of hair style? Is it some fancy product made from exotic flower essences? Is it a food that only the rich and famous know about?

You may have been too shy to ask your stylist what it is (side note: you can ask us ANYTHING!). Let’s take a minute to break down precisely what balayage is so you can salon-speak with the best of them.

Parlez-vous Français?

Balayage (pronounced BAH-LEE-AHGE) is French for “sweeping.” There, now you speak French and now you can feel more confident in your salon jargon. It’s the technique of free-hand painting highlights that gives you that natural, blended, sun-smooched coloring perfection. It’s basically like your hair is saying, “Oh, don’t mind me, I’ve just been sailing on a yacht through the Greek islands for a spell.”

Forget foil, forget sitting for hours and hours on end, say buh-bye to unnatural zebra stripes. Balayage is the quick, low maintenance solution to all your highlighting woes.

The technique

Balayage starts light at the roots and gradually saturates at the tips, creating a much softer and more blended highlight. It’s less uniform, more natural and makes people wonder, “is that dyed or was she born looking that good?” The big idea behind balayage is that it’s meant to mimic what the sun would naturally do to your hair if you spent your life on the beach.

More knockout locks, less maintenance

One of the reasons people love balayage so much, especially in the time of the pandemic, is because it’s so low maintenance. It grows out gloriously and there aren’t those strong and painfully obvious regrowth lines. And it’s great for all hair colors, textures and just about every hair style.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to balayage?

Balayage, just like painting, is an art (plus it takes years of training and certifications to get it just right), so we recommend not trying this one at home. Come in for a consult or schedule your appointment now.

Of course, you could always sail away to the Maldives and let the sun do its thing. But if that’s not in your cards, we can get you taken care of here at Hologram!
